At eleven years of age, I was trying to make friends, eating everything in sight, and being all-around awkward in my early days of puberty. At eleven years of age, Mindy Macready was beating the crap out of bad guys and saving the day as a costumed vigilante. If there was a “Who’s the most BA eleven-year-old” contest, she’s got everyone beat. So, in honor of the movie Kick-Ass being released onto Blu-Ray and DVD last Tuesday, Mindy Macready, aka Hit-Girl, is entirely worthy of being recognized as a Badass of the Week.
I’ve got a few minor spoilers here ladies and gentlemen. If you haven’t seen Kick-Ass as of yet (wait, why HAVEN’T you seen it yet?!), then tread carefully.
In the early scenes of the movie Kick-Ass, you are introduced to a little girl named Mindy. She exchanges a few words with her father, and then all of a sudden gets shot by him. But just when you’re thinking “Oh okay, killing a random child character was kinda weird”, she gets back up and reveals a bulletproof vest, and that her father is training her to get used to the feeling of being shot. You later learn that she’s a weapons expert and a lethal martial artist. As the scenes with Mindy progress, you come to see how ridiculously armed and dangerous she is. (I mean, what the hell kind of kid asks for a balisong knife for her birthday? I wanted a pony when I was eleven.)
The first scene with Mindy as her alter-ego Hit-Girl comes not too long after, when Kick-Ass is in a bit of trouble with Rasul and his thugs (and his hooker, I think). Honestly, I don’t even know how I can explain how absolutely and utterly badass this scene is. The entire fight scene is just oozing with badassery (as are the two other major fight scenes with her later in the movie). Pretty much everything you could ever ask for in a fight scene, minus maybe an explosion, is there. Blood, really sweet flips, dismemberment, crazy weapons, more blood, a lot of really terrified thugs, et cetera. And the best part? The costumed vigilante who is delivering the ass-kicking is only eleven. She’s beating the crap out of these armed adult thugs with no problem, and she’s barely a tween. That’s AWESOME.
If my terrible summary of Hit-Girl’s scene isn’t enough to make you a believer of her BAotW status, then check out this Hit-Girl-centric red band trailer for Kick-Ass. (See what I said? Red band. That means it has a few wordy dirds and some violence in it. Be forewarned.)
Being a costume vigilante is serious business. Described by Dave Lizewski as a cross between Rambo and Polly Pocket in the graphic novel, Mindy Macready/Hit-Girl has without doubt earned the rights as Badass of the Week. And for those of you who still haven’t seen Kick-Ass, what are you waiting for?! It’s on DVD now! Go buy it!
