[BAotW] From Firefly to Halo: ODST to Captain Hammer, Nathan Fillion is THE Geek Badass

The badass is an uncommon man of supreme style.  He does what he wants, when he wants, where he wants.  Each week I’m going to pick a character, person, musician, etc, and then explain to you why I believe said person is overflowing in the badassery department.

With today marking the first full day of the San Diego Comic-Con, Canadian actor and regular Comic-Con attendee Nathan Fillion was a solid choice of badass.  What makes Nathan Fillion worthy of this claim?  He’s never defeated a ship full of pirates, or saved an entire species from dire jeopardy, or rid an entire town of a zombie infestation with nothing but a chainsaw (I’m fairly certain the word ‘chainsaw’ is synonymous with ‘badass’). Why should we care about Fillion?  Three reasons:

Reason number one:  The guy’s Canadian.  Canada is a country that churns out badasses on a daily basis. (Don’t believe me? BioWare. Totally Canadian. That means Mass Effect AND Dragon Age would not be in existence if it weren’t for the northern country.)

Reason number two:  In terms of sci-fi television and movies, this guy’s been around the block.  Nathan’s acting roles have been nothing BUT awesome.  Caleb the Priest on ‘Buffy’.  Captain Malcolm Reynolds on ‘Firefly‘.  Captain Hammer on ‘Dr. Horrible’s’.  What do these characters have in common?  (Err, other than Joss Whedon…)  All of these characters are distinct, deep, and powerful.  Every one of them is a BA of the Week candidate in their own right.  You’ve got a dismissed priest/serial killer turned First Evil sidekick who had to be chopped vertically in half to be stopped.  Next, you have the captain of the spaceship Serenity who proved to countless people that an early cancellation wasn’t going to stop him so easily (hooray for a movie deal).  These roles and many other roles of Nathan’s add up to prove that casting directors are starting to figure out whom to go to when they need a badass.  In Halo: ODST, Gunnery Sergeant Edward Buck was not only voiced by Nathan, but his physical appearance was modeled after the actor as well.  Why?  Look at his face.  Question answered.

Reason number three:  He’s Captain Hammer.  And the hammer…is not his fists.
